Who are the real criminals?

"Many laws certainly make bad men, as bad men make many laws”.  ~Walter Savage Landor, Imaginary Conversations.  This is an accurate quote to consider when questioning who are the true criminals in society . Why just the other day I was walking home from swim practice.  I waited patiently for my signal, to cross a 3 way intersection. As I was crossing the street I was nearly ran over by a police car who obviously had no intention at halting, had it not been for quick reflex that cop could have hit me with the corner of his bumper and injured my right leg, once I reached the sidewalk he still had a red light, but that didn’t stop him from taking off early without sirens, without cause.  This however has not been the 1st time my family and I have witnessed an act of corruptness.  According to my data, cases range from committing man slaughter and getting away with it.  To racial and sexual and emotional harassment. I do not mean to imply that all police are corrupt I just mean to imply that there are 2 types of criminals in this world, and the ones that pose the biggest threat in my opinion are those who believe they are above the law
Policemen are formally thought of as in service of the law, they are men who choose to put their life on the line everyday to serve our society.  So what causes a man who began with good intentions to take part in such inappropriate behavior?  Logically speaking I would think it had to do mostly with the web of connections that comes gift wrapped along with their uniform.  Their comes a time, I’m almost sure when cops stray away from the oath they took to uphold the law and feel as though they have enough power to enforce laws of their own upon citizens who stand no chance against the big bad wolves.  We the U.S citizens live in a democracy, in which we have the right and we have the power.  Why is it that we allow ourselves to be subjugated to such unethical treatment?  We hold in our hands the right of impeachment; we as a whole can veto laws.  I think it’s time that those who signed up to serve, stop being those who dictate they don’t need to be the ideal cop but they do need to take responsibility and put into practice the qualities they claimed to posses. Such as integrity, responsibility, courage, prudence, and trust.  By the same token we need to become active citizens enforcing and holding people responsible for their actions.  Including those with a badge.  The best way to end corruption is to never let it start. Be active, be courageous, and report it.  Let’s work towards a better tomorrow today.

  1. "Interesting" is what comes to mind, this definitely is a problem in today's society, but i honestly don't think that it's of any of us to judge whether certain policeman are "Courageous, prudent" by watching him do his job, maybe risk his life, much less giving a ticket. Unless severely invoked then this is more socially judgmental than judicially.

  2. Couldn't agree more. This is in fact a growing problem in our country and as citizens of this great country we must criticize our government in order to stop any form of corruption. Starting off with a personal experience is great, makes it easy to relate with the reader (in my case, I can, I also faced discrimination due to my ethnicity). Love how you support the other side of your argument, not all cops are corrupt and they risk their lives for all of us. As humans we have all done some action that is prohibited or looked down upon but coming from men who serve the law (and this type of conduct is increasing) is an issue. The problem is excess, officers are given a little more freedom than the average citizen in my opinion and we must fix soon before we see the men in blue as criminals. Love your post :)

  3. Ah, I totally agree with this. Sometimes Police men just do what they want. And also they don't really care much for some weird reason. Maybe its from the stress, we don't know. But Police Men do need to be everyone's role model and enforce the law. They can't just enforce it then not do it. It's simply saying to someone they can't have a cookie then the person saying it grabs a cookie. The law is for everyone to follow, it's not an option for police men. Oh, I do suggest as well that the font for the comments be change for something a little more legible. Font really nice, but I can't read it =(

  4. Luckily the police are not reading this post. The police are not perfect. Some policeman are less perfect than others. We all have lied in the past. So why should the police be any different if they are human beings too? There is no such thing as a good role model. In this world there are only bad ones. If someone who acts like a good role model, then it means that they just haven't revealed their negatives. No matter how hard we, the human race, try- we will always do bad things. Regardless if we are part of the police, or not. We are born with evil embedded in our genes!
